Anesthesiology

Subspecialty Curriculum

1.         Rotate one month in the anesthesiology department during the PGY1 year.        

2.         Attend all neurosciences didactic conferences including subspecialty program conferences     

3.         See out-patient consults under the direct supervision of senior residents and attending staff.

Goals and Objectives

During the anesthesiology rotation, the PGY1 neurosurgery resident will learn the basic principles governing the use of local, regional and general anesthesia as well as the complications and risks associated with the use of anesthesia related to the surgical, trauma and critically-ill patients.   

Competencies

Medical Knowledge – During this rotation, the resident will be able to:

  • Build solid fundamentals of knowledge in anesthesiology and critical care/trauma patient management.
  • Apply knowledge of the pharmacokinetics and the use of drugs for pain management including PCA and epidural anesthesia and the monitoring of such drugs for patients.
  • Understand the risks and complication associated with the use of regional anesthesia.

Patient Care and Assessment – During this rotation the resident will be able to:

  • Administer regional anesthesia and local anesthetic agents in specific clinical situations to patients.

Practiced Based Learning – During this rotation the resident will be able to:

  • Develop fundamental competency in airway management including techniques for endotracheal and nasotracheal intubations

System Based Practice – During this rotation the resident will be able to:

  • Understand system-based practice of vocational rehabilitation, nursing homes and insurance issues.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills – During this rotation the resident will be able to:

  • Discuss medical issues with patient and patient families while guarding patient’s privacy.

Professionalism – During this rotation the resident will be able to:

  • Be compassionate in their dealings with patients and patient families.
  • To act in a professional manner at all times.
