Subspecialty Curriculum
The PGY1 neurosurgery resident will spend one month in the Emergency Room Department seeing emergency medical and surgical patients in the outpatient and preoperative setting under the direct supervision of emergency department staff attendings, so as to develop fundamental competency in the assessment, work-up and management of seriously ill, unstable medical and surgical patients.
1. During the PGY1 year, the resident will rotate one month through the Emergency Medicine department.
2. Attend all neurosciences didactic conferences including subspecialty program conferences
3. See out-patient consults under the direct supervision of senior residents and attending staff.
Competencies
Medical Knowledge – At the end of the ED rotation, the resident will be able to:
- Utilize appropriate skill and technique for emergency/critical care medicine procedures.
- Understand the pathophysiology of shock.
- Outline the basic principles of triage in the Emergency Department.
Patient Care and Assessment – At the end of this rotation, the resident will be able to:
- Provide outpatient and preoperative comprehensive history and physicals under the direct supervision of the emergency department attendings.
- Provide follow-up care to patient requiring, suture removal, packing removal, etc.
Practiced Based Learning – At the end of this rotation, the resident will be able to:
- Respond to consults in a timely manner.
- Review the indications for emergency operative procedures such as burr holes.
- Perform emergency resuscitation and stabilization of the seriously ill or injured patient.
System Based Practice – At the end of this rotation, the resident will be able to:
- Understand system-based practice of vocational rehabilitation, nursing homes and insurance issues.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills – At the end of this rotation, the resident will be able to:
- Discuss medical issues with patient and patient families while guarding patient’s privacy.
Professionalism – At the end of this rotation, the resident will be able to:
- To act in a professional manner at all times
